Dr. Cooper is the owner and founder of St. Francis Hospital for Animals. He grew up in Charlotte in the Freedom Park neighborhood and did his undergraduate studies at North Carolina State University. He received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University in 1984. After working for a brief period with a large animal practice in Florida, Dr. Cooper interned at one of the busiest practices in Chicago before returning to Charlotte to pursue his dream of practice ownership.
Dr. Cooper has been an animal lover since childhood. When not working, he enjoys playing Frisbee with his dogs or flying small planes. He and his wife Carol have six cats, two dogs, and two horses.
Dr. Gandara is a 2004 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. This has been the fulfillment of her childhood dream. She is an excellent diagnostician and has a special interest in pain management and soft-tissue surgery. She has a wonderful "bed-side" manner and really connects with the people she meets and their pets. She has 11 animals of her own, including horses, dogs and cats.
Annette has been with us since 1998 and is a Registered Veterinary Technician, originally from Pittsburgh, PA. She has many years of experience in Veterinary Medicine and currently serves as our office manager, technician and receptionist. She has a rescued Boxer, named Pete and several special needs cats. She is extremely knowledgeable and goes out of her way to help people and their animals.
Scott has over 30 years experience in the veterinary field and has been with us for almost 10 years. He is great with the animals and their owners and is one of the best technicians in Charlotte. Anyone who has been to our hospital knows Scott! He currently has a Rottweiler and 2 rescued cats. When not here, he enjoys being out in nature or in his mountain cabin.
Ashley has been with the practice since we opened in 1996. Her knowledge of the clients and their pets is unmatched. Originally from Hickory, she has worked in veterinary medicine since 1991 and is an invaluable asset to St. Francis. She treats all pets here with kindness, compassion and expert care, whether as a surgical assistant or exam room technician.
Jazmin joined our practice in 2011 with a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Queens College. She hopes to go to vet school soon and will be a great asset to the profession. Her science background and fluency in Spanish have been extremely beneficial to us in helping our Hispanic clients and their pets. She has a love of all animals, especially the exotics.
Athenia has been working in the veterinary field for 10 years and is also a personal trainer. She loves people and animals and has two rescues that have adopted her full-time. She is an expert at handling your pet with a gentle touch and has a calming effect on them when in the hospital. Her technical skills are superb.
Adrian has been with St. Francis since 2009. His love for animals has helped steer him in this direction. He takes great pride in his work and passes his love of animals to the clients pets. He has 3 Chihuahuas and a Parakeet. Adrian is also an artist and enjoys doing surreal art as well as pet portraits. When Adrian is not working, he enjoys spending time with his Chihuahuas.
Cathy has been with St. Francis Hospital for Animals since 2006 as a receptionist. She has worked with animals for 25 years as a groomer, veterinary assistant and caretaker. She is an "animal magnet" and currently cares for 4 dogs and 1 cat in addition to the rest of her family.
April joined St. Francis in 2014. Her veterinary experience and knowledge is extensive in wellness and preventative care, as well as critical care and trauma services.
April has specific interests in animal behavior, animal nutrition, and regenerative medicine. She has the pleasure of living with 3 dogs and 5 cats that are always keeping her busy with their own new adventures.
Bridgett has been with St. Francis since January 2015. Also a graduate from NC State University, she wears many hats, from being hands on with the patients to making sure our social media stays current. Her love for animals has gained her 3 dogs and a rabbit. When she isn't working she is almost guaranteed to be found at a dog park.
Tim came to St. Francis in June of 2014. He is our "jack of all trades" as his background is in management and construction, but he spends most of his time loving on your animals in our kennel. Friends have called Tim "animal whisperer" long before Cesar took the title. He certainly has a way of creating a special bond with each of your animals when they stay here. Tim is also the father of 2 human children who he loves to spend time with when he is not working.
Kelsey, the newest addition to our practice, began in August of 2014. She obtained degrees in Chemistry and Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has since been caring for, training and competing with horses. Three dogs, a rabbit and a massive Gelding complete her life. Vet school is her next step and she believes working with Dr. Cooper and staff provides an amazing opportunity to prepare her for the future.
Yellow found a home with us at St. Francis in May of 2015. He came in as a very sick patient, suffering initially from a bite wound and high fever. After staying with us for almost a month, he became part of our family. He has grown more and more courageous, so odds are you will catch a glimpse of him when you visit. Yellow enjoys sleeping, chewing straws, drinking out of his own specific cup, watching birds and eating. Please look for his blog, coming soon!
